Penglai, a county-level coastal city in East China's Shandong Province, is famous for the Penglai Pavilion, which is widely known as a "fairyland" and recognized as one of China's four famous pavilions along with Tengwang Pavilion, Yueyang Pavilion and Huanghe Pavilion.
With an area of 1,128 square kilometers and a population of 450,000, Penglai is one of seven world-famous grape coasts and a home to apples. It also tops the nation in gold production.
Tourism, shipbuilding, wine and auto and parts are the four pillar industries of Penglai, which receives 3.9 million tourists annually. It has received a number of recognitions, such as the "National Demonstration City for Environmental Protection" and the "National Sanitary City".
In 2012, the per capita urban disposable income of urban residents was 30,289 yuan ($4,932) while the per capita net income for rural residents was 14,490 yuan, a rise of 14.1 percent and 14.5 percent, respectively.
