Laiyang has 18 towns and 784 villages with an area of 1,734 square kilometers and a population of 876,000. It enjoys high reputation for pears and good food. It is also regarded as the hometown of dinosaurs.

Laiyang has four key industries, involving green food, autos, fine chemicals and biopharmaceuticals. There are many leading agricultural product companies based in Laiyang, such as Longda Foodstuff Group Co and Luhua Group, two of China's leading enterprises engaging in the processing of agricultural products. In addition, Laiyang has won a string of honors for its green food and agricultural products.

In 2011, there were 260 industrial enterprises above designated size in Laiyang, generating prime operating revenue of 83.8 billion yuan ($13.65 billion), a year-on-year growth of 20.1 percent.
