 Large Medium  SmallWang Yang was elected secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on May 13, 2011.

The election was held at the first plenary session of the 11th CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee.
Wang served as the CPC chief of Chongqing between 2005 and 2007 before being appointed by the CPC Central Committee as the CPC Chief of Guangdong in December 2007.
Wang Yang was born in Suzhou, Anhui province, in March 1955. He joined the Party in August 1975 and began working in June 1972. He graduated from the Party School of the CPC Central Committee completing a university education, obtaining the Masters degree in engineering.
From 1972 to 1976, Wang worked at a food factory in Suxian prefecture in East China's Anhui province.
Wang worked in Anhui province for over 20 years. He was appointed as deputy governor of Anhui province in 1993, and became a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee in the same year.
After that, he was appointed as deputy secretary of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee in 1998.
He used to be the Vice-Minister of the State Development and Planning Commission, and member of its Leading Party Members' Group from 1999 to 2003.
In 2005, Wang was appointed as Secretary of the CPC Chongqing Municipal Committee. He has been a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee since 2007.
In November 2007, Wang was appointed as the secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China.
