Sun was elected secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China at the first plenary session of the 9th CPC Fujian Provincial Committee in the provincial capital of Fuzhou.
Before taking the position of Fujian's top official in November 2009, she was Party chief and deputy chair of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
Su Shulin and Chen Wenqing were elected deputy and vice secretaries, respectively, under Sun.
Sun was born in 1950 in Raoyang, Hebei province, and joined the CPC in 1973.
She started her career after obtaining a master's degree at the Central Party School In November, 1969.
Sun held a series of posts in the Anshan Chemical Fiber Wool Spinning General Factory from 1978 to 1979. She served as factory Party Chief from 1986 to 1988.
She previously served as the vice chairman of Liaoning Provincial Federation of Trade Unions (1991-1993), President of Liaoning Provincial Women's Federation (1993-1994) and Chairman of Liaoning Provincial Federation of Trade Unions (1994-1995).
In 2005, Sun was appointed as the chairman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. She was also the first secretary of the Secretariat of Federation and its Party Chief. In November 2009, the CPC Central Committee announced her appointment as Secretary of the Fujian Provincial Committee of the CPC.
She used to be an alternate member of the 15th and 16th Central Committees of the Communist Party of China, the member of the 12th presidium of All-China Federation of Trade Unions.
