Rally against terrorism in Urumqi

An oath-taking rally against terrorism was held in Urumqi on May 23, a day after a terrorist attack at an open market claimed 43 lives, including four attackers, and injured 94.

"It can be a deterrent to criminals and terrorists," one of the local residents said watching more than 100 vehicles, including armed police cars and armored trucks, pass the capital city's main road.

Traffic police commander loses gun

Xu Jiang, a deputy head of a traffic police brigade in Hejiang county, Sichuan province, was exposed by a story on May 23 on Tianya.cn, one of China's most popular online forums, that he lost his gun when he was in a hotel room on April 26 with a female subordinate, surnamed Li, Chengdu Economic Daily reported.

Xu was punished by Hejiang Public Security Bureau for violating regulations on management of firearms.

The local disciplinary committee has started an investigation over Xu's affair and his improper ties with a private company, which was also revealed in the Tianya.cn post.

Student fighting kills three, injures one

A mass brawl among students in a middle school left three dead and one injured in Yibin city, Sichuan province. One student was killed on the spot, two succumbed to injuries in hospital and one was seriously injured, local news portal Sichuan online reported.

The fight broke out in the evening between students from Yibin's Wenxing county and Jiang'an county.

Three years after their classrooms were razed to the ground over safety reasons, 600 students at a middle school in Fuzhou, Fujian province, continue to study in portable shelters, Chinese Youth Daily reported on Friday.

Reporter choked by bailiff over phone

A reporter from Guangzhou Daily was choked by a bailiff during a dispute after the reporter brought in a mobile phone for a court hearing at the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court on Thursday, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Woman sentenced for killing own baby

A woman in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, was sentenced to four years and six months' imprisonment for intentional homicide, Southern Metropolis Daily reported on Friday.

Surnamed He, the 25-year-old migrant worker gave birth to a baby on Jan 28, 2013. As she was unmarried, He threw the baby from the third floor of the building where she lived. The baby later died of the injuries, and He was detained by police.

Toddler stable after shooting self

Woman cycles 2,000km in search of son

A 63-year-old woman spent nearly one month cycling about 2,000km from Zhengzhou, Henan province, to Xiamen, a major coastal city in Fujian province, to look for her missing son, local newspaper Orient Today reported on Friday.

Xiao Lu (not his real name), the son, had resigned from a bank and had gone into business in 2008, but it did not go smoothly, and he suffered from depression and left for Xiamen in 2010. The woman found her son soon after her arrival in Xiamen.
