Pricey Taobao item

A court in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, is auctioning a piece of land in the province with a starting price of 32.5 million yuan ($5.2 million) on Taobao, one of China's most popular online marketplaces, Modern Express reported Friday.

The land is the most expensive commodity ever traded on Taobao. And qualified potential bidders must have more than 1.7 million yuan in their Alipay account.

Crawfish killer

A 70-year-old woman in Huzhou city of Zhejiang province died after being bitten by crawfish, Zhejiang-based Morning Express reported.

The woman, surnamed Ye, was bitten on her finger one morning last weekend. Bleeding from the injury soon ended and the wound appeared normal, but became swollen that night. The next morning the woman had a high fever and went into a coma. She was sent to a Hangzhou hospital on Wednesday for emergency treatment but died.

Tao Chengjun, a doctor who treated Ye, said she died of anaerobic bacteria and was very likely infected by the crawfish. But he said whether a person will be infected with the bacteria from such a bite depends on their immunity. Ye already had heart disease, high blood pressure and liver disease, all of which caused low immunity.

Tao added that the crawfish itself is innocuous, and the bacteria can be killed if the crawfish is well cleaned and cooked.

Fisherman washed away by flood

Yang Changjiu, a 61-year-old fisherman in Hunan province, was washed away 400 meters by a flooding tide to adjacent Chongqing municipality during a nap on his boat, on May 21, Chongqing Morning Post reported.

Yang, a villager from Xinjie village in Hunan, fell asleep while fishing on the Shuangcha river, a border river between Hunan and Chongqing. He was carried away by the sudden rise in the water and rescued by firefighters after 12 hours' efforts.

Man gets prison for robbing students

A man in Xi'an was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 10,000 yuan ($1,600) for robbing students of 171.5 yuan on 11 separate occasions, Huashang Daily reported on Wednesday. The man, 26-year-old Li Nan, committed the robberies from October to December. The court said Li's behavior seriously harmed the children.

Counterfeit 100 yuan notes

Counterfeit 100 yuan ($16) notes with numbers starting with C55H and M3W9 were found in Xi'an in Shaanxi province, Huashang Daily reported on Friday. A fake C55H note was identified at a lottery agency as it failed to pass a detector on May 20.

Fake notes with numbers starting with M3S7 were also found in Jinan and Qingdao in East China's Shandong province, Wuhan Evening News reported.

Wooden plank on track delays train

A plank of wood that had been thrown in anger on a railroad track in Beijing ended up stopping an express train for 30 minutes, Jinghua Times reported on Thursday. A man surnamed Xiong threw the plank onto the tracks after almost tripping on it on Monday. The train was stopped after it hit the wood. Xiong was detained by police.

Official under probe seen as 'frugal' man

An energy official who is being investigated by prosecutors on allegations that he accepted bribes apparently led a frugal life, a news report said.

Wei Pengyuan, a deputy director at the National Energy Administration, was seen as a frugal person by his colleagues, the Beijing Times reported on Thursday. The report said he rode a bike to work and never wore luxurious clothes, although almost 100 million yuan ($16 million) in cash was discovered at his home.

Latest nuke generator passes final tests

China's latest steam generator passed its final tests on Wednesday afternoon, a milestone for China's nuclear power industry. The generator weighs 620 metric tons and is a key part of the AP1000, a third-generation nuclear power technology. China has officially adopted AP1000 as a standard for inland nuclear projects. Currently 19 nuclear reactors are in operation and 29 are under construction.
