Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains have left at least 15 people dead and 54 missing in Northwest China's Shaanxi province, flood control authorities said late Monday.
Three Gorges reservior's inflow rose up to 58,000 cubic meters a second at 8:00 am this morning, the highest this year. The local hydro meteorological bureau predicts that the most horrible flood to date with the largest water gush at a speed of nearly 70,000 cubic meters a second is being brewed at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The China Three Gorges Corporation has stepped up its protective measures by escalating its sluicing to 40,000 cubic meters a second to brace for the largest flood since its operation.
The Three Gorges Dam project on the Yangtze River will face its first major flood-control test yet Tuesday as the flow on the river's upper reaches nears 70,000 cubic meters a second -- 20,000 cubic meters more than the flow during the 1998 floods that killed 4,150 people.
Floods and landslides triggered by continuous rainstorms have left at least 34 people dead and 87 missing in west China's Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces, local authorities said Monday.

Water levels in the upper- and middle-sections of the Yangtze River have risen due to heavy rainfalls, a statement on the website of China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said Sunday.
More than 300 people remained trapped in flood and 12,300 others were evacuated as of early Sunday in rain-soaked southwest China's Chongqing, said local authorities. 13 dead, 23 missing in Sichuan
Heavy rains have caused water levels on the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake to rise, prompting local governments to step up disaster prevention work.
