ROME - One person was killed and 58 others were injured Friday when a commuter train derailed in southern Italy, authorities said.
The train apparently was traveling too fast when it derailed on a curve near the outskirts of Naples, authorities said.
"It has been pointed out that the material of the railway is new, being used for only one year," said Mayor Rosa Russo Jervolino." Apparently, there was an increase in speed. The train was going at 40 km per hour in a stretch where the threshold was set at 20."
The injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals.
Altero Matteoli, the minister of Infrastructure and Transport, has ordered an inquiry to ascertain the causes of the derailment.
