A three-part documentary featuring Lijiang city in Yunnan province has received a warm reception from audiences after their debut on local TV channel Lijiang General, according to 163.com on Feb 27.

It is the first time that Lijiang has been the focus of its own documentary which showcases the city’s history and growth through reform and opening up.

One of the three subjects, Memories of Huaping, tells the story of the people from Huaping county who spent five years building a reservoir to remedy water shortages for an Yi ethnic group community.

The story revealed the people’s courage and determination in the face of trials and adversity.

The two other stories covered in the documentary include the tale of Zhang Guimei, a woman who devoted her life’s work to improving education for impoverished children, and Xuanke, a shaman who mastered ancient instruments of magic.

“We spent a lot of time travelling back and forth across the city to discover the iconic stories of Lijiang,” said Qian Hangchen, director the subject, Memories of Huaping.
