First parent-child bicycles at West Lake

2008-September-30 14:19:11

The first batch of bicycles with safety chairs on the back will be provided in Hangzhou starting Tuesday, the first day of China's National Day holiday, in eastern China's Zhejiang Province.

A total of 1,000 such parent-child bicycles will be available for rental at West Lake, China News Service reports.

The move by Hangzhou Public Transport Corporation was to benefit tourists traveling with children and ease the heavy traffic during the holiday, China News Service says.

A female tourist surnamed Li said the parent-child bicycles have solved a big problem for her.

"Previously, when I brought my child here, it was impossible for me to enjoy the scenery when riding a bicycle without a safety chair. The parent-child bicycles have now swept our worries aside," she said.

Additional bicycles will be placed in other urban areas, an official at the Hangzhou Public Transport Corporation said.

Staff members will check the ages of the renters to see whether they accord with regulations. Riders younger than 18 years old cannot carry a child and children eight years old or more are not allowed to ride in the safety chair.
