Thousand Island Lake |
Weary of urban life and dreaming of an escape from the bustling metropolis? Qiandaohu - or Thousand Island - Lake offers a respite with its verdant mountains, crystal-clear waters and variety of islands.
In western Chun'an county of Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, the lake covers 570 sq km and has more than 1,000 small islands - hence its name.
An island by its nature can bring a sense of escape, a place where one can leave behind the cares of routine life and start a new adventure. The lure attracts huge numbers of tourists each year. The charm is enhanced by roaming animals like deer, monkeys and peacocks.
Averaging 34 m deep, the lake is clear, with visibility in the water around 10 m.
With 17.8 billion cu m of drinking-quality water, the lake has attracted many well-known bottled water brands, including Nongfu Spring.
The water company's state-of-the-art production facilities near the lake have become a State-level model spot for industrial tourism.
Other tourist attractions not surprisingly feature island tours and water sports. Some are designed for newlyweds to provide a romantic honeymoon.
The area includes distinctive scenic spots with names like Plat Blossom Mountain, Stone Forest, Dragon Hill, Xian Hill, Animal-Series and Folding Screen Section.
As a water-sports training site, the lake provides an ideal environment for recreational activities. Meng Guanliang and Yang Weijun, champions in the scull double at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, trained there.
Many vacationers also enjoy water sports, including swimming, fishing, sailing, windsurfing and motor boats.
Four yachting clubs with more than 30 luxury yachts are operational at the lake. The lake also boasts the first fully submerged sightseeing submarine in the country, the Tianqing.
Home to 87 freshwater fish species, the lake is a popular destination for fishing aficiandos. Fish banquets are another appeal of the lake.
Locals say that autumn and winter are the best seasons to visit the lake. Fine weather, cool and fresh air and clear water are the the most enjoyable.
Eco-friendly town
Named after the lake, Qiandaohu town has an area of 6.5 sq km and a population of more than 50,000.
Tucked away into the mountains, the picturesque town has an urban green coverage of 46.8 percent and has gained fame for its ecology.
It received the only golden laurel in the finals of the Eighth International Garden Cities competition held in Canada in 2004.
Recent years witnessed a boom in the tourism industry of the young town with millions of visitors each year.
