More than 10 AIDS/HIV cases have been confirmed at a university in the Guangdong provincial capital, according to Wang Ming, director of the Guangzhou city center of disease control.
"All the patients with AIDS/HIV are gay students," Wang was quoted as saying by Information Times, of Guangzhou.
Wang did not reveal the name of the university where the 10 cases were diagnosed.
Other cases of AIDS/HIV have also been confirmed at other universities in Guangzhou, Wang told local media.
A total of 25 student AIDS patients and HIV carriers were detected last year, Wang said.
That was up from seven cases in 2008, Wang said.
Although the number of students with AIDS/HIV is still low in the southern metropolis, raising the awareness of students to prevent the disease from spreading on campuses and promoting AIDS/HIV knowledge at university campuses has become a tough task, Wang added. He did not give reasons why.
The number of students diagnosed with AIDS or HIV in Guangzhou has been on the rise in recent years.
According to statistics revealed by Wang's center, the city reported 203 people with AIDS/HIV aged from 15 to 24 in 2012, up from 101 in 2008.
