A mother and her son and daughter jumped together from a school building after the mother quarrelled with a teacher about her son being teased in class, South China Metropolis Daily reported on Friday.
The mother, Xu Yuemei, went to a primary school in Baiyun district in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, at noon on Thursday and jumped from the classroom building with her 9-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter.
The son died and the mother and daughter are in critical condition at a hospital as of Thursday.
Huang Weiyou, Xu's husband, said he and his wife came to the district 13 years ago to establish a vegetable farm. Their kids went to a nearby school. In May, their son suffered an injury to his right eye at the school and the family paid a great deal for his medical treatments. Soon after the injury, the son told his parents that he was being ridiculed by classmates and teachers for his injured eye and that he did not want to go to school. The parents then went to the school and had a quarrel with a teacher surnamed Xie.
Huang said that his wife may have quarrelled again with the teacher before jumping off the building. The school has yet to respond to the incident.
Police investigated the case and initially ruled out the possibility of a homicide.
