'Killer' finds victim alive and well
A former security guard who fled his hometown for six years to escape a manslaughter rap discovered on his return that his "victim" was still alive.
Jun Wei, 29, went on the run in 2005 after a fight with two thieves who were attempting to steal pipes from the construction site he was working at in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan province.
He said he was attacked and, as an act of self-defense, hit one of the men on the head with a steel pipe. Thinking that the man lying in a pool of blood was dead, Jun ran.
For six years he lived as a fugitive. He disguised himself as a beggar and survived on the money he made from collecting garbage.
When he surrendered to police on the eve of Spring Festival last year, however, he was told that the thief had actually survived.
The good news was authorities decided not to prosecute Jun, as he had not intended to commit bodily harm and had willingly turned himself in. The bad news was that his mother had died while he was in hiding.
