A news conference for the launching of the "Helping Affected Families of Drunk Driving Special Action" project is to be held at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, in Beijing on Dec 2, 2011. The event is hosted by the China Ageing Development Foundation and National Committee for Respecting the Old and Caring for the Young. It will also invite well-known enterprises and news media to participate.

According to statistics collected by the Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, from 2006 to 2010, about 3,500 people were killed in drunk driving accidents and about 9,000 were injured. Since drunk driving was deemed an act of crime and listed in the Criminal Law on May 1, 2011, 213,000 alcohol violations have been investigated and dealt with. Among them, 32,000 were drunk driving accidents, accounting for 15 percent of the alcohol violations.

In order to propagate China Road Traffic Safety Law, to coordinate with the Traffic Management Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security to deal with drunk driving and to promote safe driving, the afore-mentioned organizations, collaborating with related companies, initiated the special helping action. This special action will focus on unprivileged groups, help families affected by drunk driving, reveal the serious harm of drunk driving and promote the construction of a harmonious society. After the launching of the program, the leading team will host a series of related activities in Beijing and other big cities in China during traditional holidays like the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival and Mid-autumn Festival. Hopefully, this activity will have a wide, positive social effect.

The leading agency will examine and approve the number of the helped families and the amount of money every family will receive, according to the will of donating organizations.
