The fire, breaking out at about 9am on the first working Monday after the nation’s May Day holiday, started on the bus when it was about to leave a stop near the junction of Huangxing and Guoquan roads in northeastern Shanghai’s Yangpu district.
“Something caught fire all of a sudden in the middle section of the car, without any noises,” Liu Kai, who was seated in the rear part of the vehicle and had his foot and knees burnt, told China Daily.
“About 20 to 30 people were in the bus, including an old woman with a baby in arms,” said the young man, still being hospitalized. He said people were pushing each other to rush out of the bus.
