The subdistrict office of Yungang street in Beijing’s Fengtai district held an awards ceremony for all the moral role models voted for by its residents on Oct 28.
The award winners in the area came from all walks of life, such as cleaners, social workers and volunteers, some of which were even retired workers over 70 years old.
These were just a small part of the representatives of about 43,000 people in the 8.53-square kilometer area, which is inhabited by many researchers and workers of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp (CASIC), the nation’s leading developer of spacecraft and rockets.
People in Yungang subdistrict have witnessed many changes in their lives in recent years following the efforts of both its management committee and volunteers in their neighborhood.
There are more than 3,000 volunteers in a total of 96 teams in the area. About 600 of them can be found everywhere on weekends — bus stations, supermarkets and communities, offering all kinds of services in Yungang.
"A lot of researchers on aerospace moved in from other places and began their careers here. They made so much in the way of contributions to our nation’s aerospace industry, and it is our obligation to provide a good environment for them and their families," a local social worker said.

The grassroot Party members in this area played an important role in making this progress, such as organizing various activities to enrich the lives of the residents, solving difficulties for those in need, as well as providing voluntary services.
Wang Liping, who was a nurse before her retirement in 2002, now continues her career as a volunteer in the community. She initiated a team to give health consulting care for the senior residents in her neighborhood.
"Serving our neighbors boosts my value and makes me happy," Wang said.
Wang is just one of these kind-hearted retirees in Yungang. She is also a member of the advisory group, which is composed of five senior residents whose average age is above 74 years old.
Ma Zhen, an 83-year-old senior Party member, is the oldest "consultant" in the group. He took part in the War of Liberation (1945-1949) in his teens and devoted more than 30 years to the nation’s development of the aerospace industry. In 1991 when he retired, he started to enjoy life volunteering and assisting social workers in various ways. The advisory group made field surveys and collected suggestions from people, which helped the management committee get to know more about what to do for residents in the area.
