Chinese private equity fund unveils new incubator for startups in UK
By Cecily Liu ( chinadaily.com.cn ) Updated: 2016-02-28 20:58:45In London, Angel Plus's partners are the IUIA (International Universities Innovation Alliance) and Level39, and both organizations will help to promote the IUIA - A+Lab opportunity to startups in the UK's technology space.
IUIA's London subsidiary, IUIA Ventures UK, was established in October 2015 during President Xi Jinping's UK visit, to help high growth Chinese and British startups expand into each other's markets. It is also located inside Level39, and currently hosts four London-based companies. IUIA Ventures UK is the organization's first international subsidiary, and it is also now preparing to establish subsidiaries in the US and Singapore.
Meanwhile, it also helps to take Chinese startups onto the global stage, mainly by working with Chinese provincial governments who recommend local startups in their incubators and industrial parks.
"We have a vision similar to that of Angel Plus, in helping the most high technology startups expand internationally, which binds our partnerships strong," says IUIA secretary general Sun Wansong.
Currently IUIA partners with around 70-80 universities globally, and its vision is to expand this network to 1000 partner universities in the next three to five years, Sun says.
The Beijing-based IUIA is a non-profit organization that takes international technology startups to China to support the country's aim of moving up the value chain. It partners with international universities, think-tanks and incubators to host startup competitions, through which it identifies promising startups.
The IUIA was founded in 2015 with support from multiple Chinese government agencies, including China Investment and Promotion Agency of the Ministry of Commerce, China's Torch High Technology Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology and Foreign Expert Bureau.
It also established joint venture companies with Chinese companies to invest in promising projects. It has already invested in three companies, in the US, Hong Kong and Canada, all of which are startups with a key focus to expand into China.
