Business and trade recover in Urumqi

About 98 percent of the shops damaged during July 5th riot in Urumqi have now reopened and trade is rising again. Commerce authorities are also busy compensating traders for their losses.

This car dealership was seriously damaged during the riot, with losses estimated at 8 million yuan.

Five days after the shop reopened, customers have paid deposits on 23 cars.

Local Buyer, said, "I can feel the government's efforts to help business recover."

Compensation for traders is also underway.

Zhang Junxiang, Director, Urumqi Commerce Bureau, said, "We've calculated the compensation comes to 30 million yuan, and we need to pay more than 8 hundred traders."

Statistics from Urumqi customs show foreign trade is rising. A million tons of freight passed through customs in Urumqi from July 6th to 15th. That's 16 percent more than the same period last year.

Wang Zhixiong, Urumqi Customs Chief, said, "The 17 ports in Urumqi are operating smoothly now."

Xinjiang is also a major fruit growing region. Local fruit companies are busy with the harvest to help the economy recover and improve people's lives.
