Pripyat, built nearly a mile from the plant to house the Chernobyl nuclear power plant's workers, was evacuated within hours after the April 26, 1986 explosion. As Ukrainians slept on April 26, 1986, a reactor at the nuclear power station exploded in the world's worst nuclear accident. Within two months, 29 station workers and firefighters were dead.
