BUENOS AIRES - Rowdy soccer fans clashed with police Friday in Berisso, a city in Buenos Aires provice, leaving at least three officers injured and leading to the arrest of two fans.
The incident took place during a second-division game between Villa San Carlos and Boca Unidos de Corrientes, which had to be suspended before the end of the first half to prevent more injuries.
Fighting broke out in the stands and outside the stadium in Berisso as home team San Carlos was losing 0-2 to Unidos in minute 44, and lasted some 30 minutes before police using rubber bullets and tear gas were able to control the crowd.
Referee Ramiro Lopez decided to suspend the game, citing a "lack of security."
San Carlos currently ranks in last place and is in danger of slipping into a third-division team, with just 23 points after 33 games, including four wins, 11 ties and 18 losses.
