Olympic volunteers from Beijing International Studies University attend a training session at the Olympic Green Hockey Field.

Numbers Games

560,000 citizens, the youngest, 15 and the oldest, 80, are ready to help the Games become the "grandest of all".

Though only one in five of them will be stationed at the Olympic venues, the 100,000 volunteers is an Olympic record; and the others will be stationed throughout Beijing.

Many of the volunteers will be from outside the Chinese mainland. More than 20,000 overseas Chinese and expatriates living in China have already applied to be volunteers. The year-long recruitment of overseas volunteers kicked off in March.

Foreign correspondents gather before the press conference on the launch of the theme song for the one-year countdown celebrations.

Numbers Games

According to official records, there are 278 foreign media outlets in Beijing with about 500 correspondents.

But that number will be dwarfed by the 21,600 accredited and about 50,000 non-accredited journalists coming to cover the Olympic Games and witness the transformation in China.
