Every morning, 96 guards raise the flag at Tian'anmen Square in Beijing in 2 minutes and 7 seconds, the time it takes for the sun to rise above the horizon.

The flag-raising time differs from one day to another coinciding with the time of sunrise.

On each National Day that falls on October 1, about 200,000 spectators come for the event. On the national flag, the red color symbolizes revolution, the larger yellow star represents the Communist Party of China and the four smaller ones symbolize the workers, farmers, urban petty bourgeoisie and patrotic capitalists.
