Wang Zhihuan(688-742), or Wang Jiling, was born in Jin Yang, near Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province. He was clever and eager to learn when young, and mastered the classics before his thirties and became a famous poet during the high point of the Tang Dynasty. He associated out with the poets Gao Shi and Wang Changlin and many of his poems were made into songs by musicians, which brought him fame and influence. He was renowned especially for his use of the image of a frontier fortress. Only six of his poems remain, but his "Ascending another story for the farther sight" has been quoted over a long time as a symbol of pursuing an ideal.
