Apples from Yuncheng, millet from Taihang Mountains, mature vinegar from Taiyuan and other produce brands will be further promoted as Shanxi province works to expand the market for its specialty farm products.
Leading businesses in the farm produce processing industry will be encouraged to invest more in research and development (R&D) in healthcare products made from agricultural products and to build a brand management system.
Shanxi will increase exports of local agricultural produce, such as fruit, edible fungi and asparagus. An export platform for farm produce in Yuncheng and an export inspection and quarantine platform for the city's fruit will be established.
Meanwhile, Shanxi will optimize the planting structure of its produce and upgrade the farm produce industry, which includes coarse cereal and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), said Guan Jianxun, director of Shanxi Agriculture Department, at a meeting on agriculture held in Taiyuan on March 7.
The province will add 20,000 hectares of new farmland for growing high-quality coarse cereals, including naked oat and buckwheat. About 270 square kilometers will be used to cultivate regional TCM produce. Local orchards covering 20,000 hectares will be reconstructed.
