In Shanxi province, where local merchants promote a thriving tea trade, a tea culture society was established on Dec 18 in Taiyuan, as part of an effort to boost tea culture across the province and beyond.
The society will explore and disseminate tea culture, as well as conduct comprehensive research on Shanxi merchants who have kept alive the "Great Tea Road" –– an international trade route stretching from Fujian province in South China to Russia –– for centuries.
"We intend to foster tea culture-based tourism and revive the 'Great Tea Road', making Shanxi and its culture known by more foreign countries," said Wang Youqiang, president of Shanxi Tea Culture Society.
Various activities themed around Shanxi tea culture and the tea road trade will be hosted by the institute to encourage the growth of the tea industry and carry forward the frontier spirit of Shanxi merchants. Also, the society will set up a platform through which tea businesses can communicate.
The society has won support from other institutions, such as the Shanxi Merchants Research Institute in Qixian county and the Shanxi Academy of Social Sciences.
