Well known Chinese movie director and producer Jia Zhangke will build an arts center in his hometown, Fenyang, North China's Shanxi province.
Construction of The Jia Zhangke Arts Center began on March 10. The center will contain an exhibition area, a museum, and a movie theater, and is expected to open to the public in October 2017.
As one of the "sixth-generation directors" in the Chinese cinema industry, 45-year-old Jia has garnered international praise and awards for a number of his films over the past 10 years. His representative works include Mountains May Depart, Still Life, and A Touch of Sin. In view of his outstanding achievements in the Chinese film industry Jia was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 68th Cannes Film Festival in May last year.
The center was designed by Wang Shimu, also born in Fenyang, who graduated from China's Central Academy of Fine Arts and is studying at the AA School of Architecture.
Covering an area of 5,000 square meters, the center will serve as a place for artistic exhibition and brand activities.
The museum will collect films and books about movies, art, design, music, dancing, architecture, history, and philosophy.
Scholars and artists in and outside of China will be invited to come and give lectures at the center. Other events like classic movie reviews, fashion shows, and theatre performances will be held as well.
Jia also will open a Shanxi cuisine restaurant near the center named after his movie Mountains May Depart called in Chinese "Shan He Gu Ren" to promote local and Shanxi food.
