An agreement for meat and vegetable distribution traceability system construction was signed between the Shanxi Commerce Department and the city of Jinzhong with the Ministry of Commerce. It marked Jinzhong as one of the fifth batch pilot cities in meat and vegetable distribution traceability system construction.

A meat and vegetable distribution traceability system utilizes the modern logistics network and three-level management platforms at central, provincial and municipal levels to record various information in meat and vegetable distribution flow by applying technologies such as IC cards and QR codes.

The consumers of such products can inquire about upstream product origins and animal birthplaces. The traceability systems in all the pilot cities should have unified information collection indicators, coding rules, transmission forms, interface standards and traceability regulations.

The system incorporates trade, electronic settlement and traceability together to form an information chain that tells where a product comes from, where it will go and who is responsible for it.

A total of eight cities were listed into the fifth batch of pilot cities, namely Lhasa in Tibet, Jinzhong in Shanxi, Haidong in Qinghai, Tongren in Guizhou, Shihezi in Xinjiang, Wuzhong in Ningxia, and Weihai and Linxi in Shandong.

The distribution traceability system of meat and vegetables was initiated by the ministries of commerce and finance in 2010. Fifty cities throughout the country were listed in the first four batches.
