Nantong Museum was established by national industrialist Zhang Qian (1853-1926) in 1905 during the reign of Emperor Guang Xu in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The museum is seated on the bank of Nantong’s Haohe River and it is the first museum established by Chinese people. It was named as a National Major Protected Historical and Cultural site by the State Council in 1988.
