A parade consisting of more than 60 new energy vehicles was held on November 4 in the southeastern Chinese city of Shenzhen.
The event will be followed by the 25th World Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition in Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, on Nov. 5-9.
The electric, hydrogen powered or hybrid cars and buses from both local and foreign brands traveled some 55 km on the main roads in Shenzhen in more than two hours.
Jiang Ruihua, president of Lanhai Energy-Saving Technology Co. in Zhuhai, an electric vehicle battery maker, said the parade sought to encourage more consumers to learn about and support the electric vehicle industry.
Many curious pedestrians stopped to look at the motorcade and some passing drivers even took pictures.
"Some time ago people said that electric vehicles were only at the stage of research and development," said a local resident surnamed Zhou. "I didn't expect to see such a motorcade running in front of me."
China announced in June that it would subsidize the purchase of green cars to bolster the new industry and reduce vehicle emissions.
Subsidies of up to 60,000 yuan (9,000 U.S. dollars) will be given to buyers of completely electric vehicles in pilot cities like Shanghai, Changchun, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Hefei.
