Selected works by the Hangzhou Art School include the works of such masters as Lin Fengmian, Dong Xiwen, Chang Shuhong and Fang Ganmin. Established by Lin (1900-91) in 1927, the Hangzhou Art School rose to fame in the 1930s for both Western oil paintings and traditional Chinese ink and wash. Lin, the first headmaster of the school, was well-known for his portrait, landscape and still-life paintings and was one of the first to advocate the blending of Chinese and Western painting techniques in the early 20th century.
