Each Saturday on Zhejiang University Xixi campus, Chuck, from Utah in the US and now an English teacher of Zhejiang University, has a date with a bunch of kids – to practice baseball.
Originally initiated in early 2008 by some parents who were concerned about their kids spending too much time on computers, the baseball team now has about 10 regular members, ranging from nine years old to 13 years old. Li chenyang started playing on the team when he was back in elementary school. Now a team member of No.13 middle school baseball team, his team has competed in China, Japan, Russian and Korea and won Young Player Baseball competition this summer, with four wins in five games.
Chuck came to China in 1998. Being a big baseball fan himself, he is very disappointed to find out that baseball is not popular in China. Do it or lose it, a phrase he often uses to encourage his students to put thoughts into action, he started teaching baseball in China. After becoming the coach for Zhejiang University baseball team in 2003, he led his crew to start from being an amateur side and grow into a China National Collegiate Baseball Tournament team.
