Hangzhou Municipal Education Department has launched a series of new policies to promote equal education for migrant children.

According to the policies, Hangzhou will spend 30 million yuan annually, with each migrant student receiving a subsidy of 600 yuan every year. Schools designed especially for migrant children will be added to the prestigious school group strategy and all migrant students who qualify for schooling will be entitled to study in the schools closest to their homes.

“The number of children of migrant workers in Hangzhou is increasing every year. They would like to stay here for school education,” Xu Yichao, Minister of Hangzhou Municipal Education Department, said.

Currently, 170,000 children of migrant workers go to school in Hangzhou and 54 private schools are specially designed to receive those children. Nearly 80,000 migrant children attend school in urban Hangzhou while migrant children make up more than half of total enrollment of schools in other districts in Hangzhou.

Xu has promised to provide equal training and employment opportunities for the migrant students.
