Yang, winner of the 2009 World Championships, powered home in one minute 56.74 seconds, holding off second-placed Song Wenyan who swam 1:57.36. Pang Jiayin, Yang’s national team fellow settled for bronze in 1:57.40.
Yang trailed Pang closely, who set the early pace, in almost three fourths of the race, but quickly pulled off at the last 50m.
Another Hangzhou player, Wu Peng, succeeded in defending his trademark 200m butterfly crown on Tuesday to recover from an earlier upsetting fifth place in the 400m individual medley.

Wu surged through the water in 1:54.40, comfortably beating second-placed Chen Weiwu, who clocked 1:55.51.
