Beauty as far as the eye can see

2009-September-1 10:01:51

Chun'an County is located in the west part of Zhejiang Province, connecting Jiande in the west and 151 kilometers from the capital city of Hangzhou.

The main attraction of Chun'an, Qiandao Lake, or Thousand Islands Lake, is situated at the southwest of Xin'an River.

It is a water reservoir formed when the Xin'an River Power Station was built in 1959.

The lake is composed of 1,078 isles, with forest coverage of 82.5 percent and 85 species of fish. The lake enjoys 573 square kilometers and the water is drinkable. Nongfu Spring mineral water comes from here.

Six scenic areas have been established: Ping Mountain, Long Mountain, Mei Mountain, Wildlife, Xian Mountain, Shilin (Stone Forest).

Inside these areas are 14 scenic spots, ranging from natural sightseeing (Meifeng Island, Guihua Island, Xianshan Island, Shilin) to leisure and entertainment (Wenxin Island, luxury cruise, Kaiyuan holiday village, Tainqing Island, Fenhua holiday village), from cultural and historical sites (Wulong, Longshan, Tianchi and Mishan islands) to wildlife (Shenlong, Monkey, Orchid, Santan and Peacock islands), as well as other special activities (a happy village tour, orchards tour, ecological summer camp, healing program for elderly people, island survival, fishing, underwater exploration).

The best thing about Mei Mountain is that on the peak, you can see all the isles in Qiandao Lake.

In history, Long Mountain was the place when men of letters gathered. You can visit specimens of the traditional Chun'an architecture, such as Hai Rui's Shrine, Shixia Shuyuan (an ancient academy). These display the craftsmanship of woodcut, stone carving and brick carving.

Mishan Monastery

Mi Mountain is a mountain in the middle of the lake, on which there is a thousand-year-old monastery. It is said that the "Story of Three Monks" came from here.

Based on an old Chinese saying, "three monks, no water," the story is a lesson in responsibility. Three monks allow personal pride to interfere with their daily tasks, each believing the other two should be the ones to go downhill to fetch water.

When a fire breaks out, however, they work together to save the temple.
