Figures paintings

Forty figure paintings, done in different styles, are on display at the Beijing Wan Fung Art Gallery.

They include the works of both accomplished artists such as Shen Daohong, Wang Mingming and He Jiaying, and several young, innovative painters.

Shen Daohong draws inspiration from Tang Dynasty poems, and this gives his works a literary touch and brisk delicacy. Hu Yongkai employs elaborate colors and fine brushwork to portray female images. Ma Haifang's watercolor paintings are set against scenes of old Beijing hutong, and employ simple brush strokes to depict his vivid characters.

Figure paintings, together with landscapes and flower-and-bird drawings, are the three major genres of traditional Chinese art works. The main themes are images from mythology, history and portraits of royalty and celebrities. Nowadays, figure paintings focus more on ordinary people and their lives.
