Photographer Cheng Yuyang's solo show focuses on his home province of Sichuan after last year's earthquake.

The exhibits comprise 10 large black and white pictures chosen from the nearly 100 Cheng took at the time.

Spirit of nature

They are mainly of the statues of Buddha and other immortal figures that were destroyed in the earthquake, reflecting from a unique angle the great loss wrought by the natural disaster.

The statues, exquisitely carved, carefully protected and faithfully worshipped, were too fragile to survive but among the devastation, one can still detect a calmness and peace.

Cheng, 40, the director of the photographic department of the Beijing Morning Post, says his goal was to reveal the relationship between human beings and nature.
