Kirsten Dunst's new period movie, Marie-Antoinette has been selected to compete at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Directed by Sofia Coppola, the film which also stars Jason Schwartzman (Shopgirl), sees a 19-year-old Viennese girl becoming the queen of France in 1744, before being famously beheaded.

Marie-Antoinette is one of the early contenders for the Palme d’Or awards, Cannes top prize.

Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code will open the 59th Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 17 to 28.
