Traditional villages, home of both Chinese culture and memories, are vanishing at a fast rate. According to latest statistics, over 900,000 traditional villages disappeared over the decade, which means 1.6 traditional villages are vanishing each day on average in China.
Facing the fast urbanization and the need for economic growth, how can people preserve their cultural heritage? What is the significance of protecting old buildings and houses in the villages? Does that just mean to copy the past? He Wei, activist of traditional village protection and associate professor of Architecture Department at the Central Academy of Fine Art, explains the growing problem and offers solutions.
