Calligraphy for modern times

By Yu Ran ( Shanghai Star ) Updated: 2014-08-28 17:00:52

In addition to calligraphy, Xue also organizes lectures on traditional Chinese literature by visiting specialists and professors, handicraft workshops and outdoor painting excursions.

"I just created my name seal," says Eco Zheng, a housewife who spent about three hours making her first name seal by hand in Xue’s studio. "I learned that it is such an interesting and complicated process to carve a seal, which is a unique signature handmade by a person instead of the modern way of signing," she says.

Different from other calligraphy classes, which require students to pay long-term fees or take out a membership, students at Xue's studio can pay after each class.

For Xue, all the people who attend the class are not just students, but also friends, and they can all learn from each other.

"I am trying to create a spiritual atmosphere for people who love literature to receive a delightful cultural experience and deepen their knowledge of ancient Chinese culture," Xue says.
