A senior executive of a Chinese listed company has been detained for allegedly raping a woman in Beijing, Beijing Times reported.

Police from Beijing's Chaoyang district confirmed on Thursday that Wu Zhiyang, chairman of New York-listed Chinese handset maker CECT, had been detained on suspicion of raping a woman surnamed Jin, the newspaper said.

"Wu, 40, wanted to pay Jin a total of 500,000 yuan ($80,900) to settle the case out of court, but it was refused," a police officer was quoted as saying.

Wu, who is divorced, met Jin, 29, a golf coach, in June through a friend.

The alleged rape took place when Wu arrived in Jin's home on the night of Nov 13.

Wu, a native of Fujian province, was once the youngest Chinese chairman of a New York-listed company. When Wu's company went public in New York in May 2007, he was selected as one of the top 10 business executives in China.
