SHANGHAI - Illegal chemical dumping has been attributed to a pungent smell and water pollution in Jinshan district in Shanghai, local police said Friday.
Police said the waste containing styrene substance was brought by chemical tanks and dumped in Zhujing township, which gave off a pungent odor and contaminated the water of Jueshi Port.
Officers carried out spot checks after receiving clues from the public Thursday evening.
Police said they have detained suspects and the person in charge of the polluting company.
Police did not disclose the name of the polluter, saying the case is still under investigation.
