"Exports and imports each surged more than 20 percent in the first 10 days of this months, yielding an expanded trade surplus," Deputy Commerce Minister Li Jinzao told a news briefing on Friday.

"This shows that our trade situation is improving, and gives us added confidence that we will achieve our goal of a 10 percent growth of trade in this year," he said.

April saw China's trade expand 2.7 percent with exports edging up 4.9 percent and imports increased by just 0.3 percent, according to China's General Administration of Customs.

However, the international trade environment cannot improve immediately, said Li, implying that the situation will continue to be challenging.

The government will further expand export markets, including in traditional and emerging markets.

The second China-Eurasia Expo, to be held from Sept 1 to 5 in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, will see China further open up its inland regions, especially in the west, to boost trade with neighboring countries, according to Li.

In addition, China will speed up adjusting its trade structures so that Chinese exports can better meet demand in overseas markets. The government will also improve its trade procedures and create a better trade environment for domestic and overseas businesses to expand their trade, Li said.
