While four female deputies were talking to the media at the Great Hall of People on Monday, a male deputy broke in, saying: "Here are gifts for you for International Women's Day."

He is Chen Fei, dubbed "vegetable basket deputy" from Zhejiang province. Since he became a deputy of National People's Congress, he has distributed vegetable baskets to deputies each year.

"So far, I've distributed more than 7,000 baskets," he said.

He also includes his name cards, on which are written many titles, including NPC deputy and civil outstanding people in environmental protection.

When asked about the cost of the baskets, he replied shyly, "Not much, only 20-odd yuan each." This is his own way of advocating a low-carbon lifestyle, he added.
