When work on farm ends or slows down in off-season, many farmers head to cities to earn some money. Most of them end up as laborers in the construction industry or as repairmen.
In Yuncheng, a city in North China's Shanxi province, hundreds of farmers from surrounding areas gather around a crossroad. They wait patiently for hours for any work, but sometimes all they can do is watch pedestrians and vehicles pass by, or spend the whole day talking to each other. Even when they do get a job, the employer offers them the lowest possible wage. In order to save some money, they are forced to spend as little as possible on food.
