A maker space, an area dedicated to innovation, opened at the Shanghai Knowledge & Innovation Community (KIC) on Sunday as part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week China.

The week was organized by the Shanghai Technology Entrepreneurship Foundation for Graduates in a bid to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

"The maker space echoes the city's innovation campaign to train students to innovate," said Grace Wu, marketing service manager of KIC.

Wu said it will hold a workshop every two weeks.

The first workshop will be held this week to teach them how to use 3D printers and make electronic elements and sensors, she said.

"It's a good way to help youngsters realize their dreams," said Chen Yongming, executive director of the Shui On Land.

The property developer launched KIC 10 years ago by joining with the Yangpu district government to develop cloud computing technology, software exports and high-tech industries. To date, 10 billion yuan ($1.63 billion) has been injected into KIC.

"Entrepreneurship needs social support, especially from investors, to help makers overcome a shortage of funds," Chen said.

More than 3,000 candidates have applied for funds from foundation, he said, adding that 703 projects have been financed.

The Shanghai Technology Entrepreneurship Platform, one of the sponsors of the entrepreneurship week, has signed agreements with the Shanghai R&D Public Platform and China HR.com to provide financial and talent training services for enterprises at KIC.
