BEIJING - China's State Councilor Liu Yandong on Wednesday reaffirmed the government's consistent position on the protection of intellectual property rights (IPR) as she addressed a diplomatic conference on the protection of audiovisual performances.

Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the developing country had completed the course of several centuries of developed countries in IPR efforts since 1980, when China joined the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

China has made great efforts to explore ways to develop and protect intellectual property with Chinese characteristics, and IPR protection has become the country's national strategy, she said.

China has established an intellectual property system in line with international rules and consistent with China's national conditions, she added.

Liu commended the WIPO, the organizer of the conference, for its contribution to IPR protection, noting that the creation, utilization, protection and management of intellectual property were the joint responsibilities of the international community.

The Chinese state councilor called for more institutional and technical supports for developing countries so to make the international intellectual property system more fair and reasonable, and generally improve global IPR protection.

China will actively bear the responsibilities and obligations within its capability, she said.

Liu also met with Francis Gurry, the director general of the WIPO, during the event. The conference was attended by more than 700 delegates from around the world.
