Beijing produced the largest amount of domestic waste out of 246 major cities last year, according to the Ministry of Environmental Protection's annual report released on Tuesday.
Shanghai and Guangzhou were second and third respectively.
The solid waste report in 2015 said the total amount of municipal solid waste totaled to more than 185 million metric tons.
Shanghai was first in terms of medical waste produced, with the 246 cities producing a total of 697,000 tons of such waste last year. Almost all was dealt with properly, the report said.
In addition, the report has introduced the amount of solid waste from industries, hazardous waste and domestic waste generation and utilization.
In 2015, these cities produced over 1.91 billion metric tons of solid waste from industrial production, among which 60.2 percent were utilized in various ways including recycling, and 170,000 tons were disposed.
The amount of hazardous waste from industrial production was 28 million tons, and 79 percent of the inspected companies producing or processing the hazardous waste met the national standards, increasing by 4.1 percent per year, the ministry said.
