The election of the Beijing people’s congress began on Nov 15, 2016.
More than 12,000 polling stations around Beijing were set up to ensure a smooth election. A total of 6,623 candidates for district people’s congress deputies were elected to positions at 2,264 electoral districts and 15,142 candidates for township people’s congress deputies were elected to 5,144 electoral district positions. In all, more than 14,000 deputies will eventually be elected.
Groups of uniformed staff and service areas were arranged to provide more than 3,000 registered voters with integrated services, like verification, issuing ballots, consultation, assistance with writing votes, allograph services, confidential voting rooms, and ballot boxes in Xicheng district.
“We come from a resettlement residential district. The comprehensive ecological improvement is a big issue currently. We really want to choose someone who can really do something,” said a voter before casting her ballot at a voting booth to elect new deputies for the local people's congress in Beijing.
An 84-year-old voter said, “I kept all my ballot tickets from my very first time in 1954, when I witnessed the exercise of suffrage.”
At the Xicheng polling station, a special ballot booth area was set up to guarantee voters can make their choices in secret.
