All flower beds for this year's National Day celebrations on Tian'anmen Square and along Chang'an Avenue will be made using 3-D printing, the Beijing Bureau of Landscape and Forestry has said.
Last year, only the gigantic flower basket on Tian'anmen Square was made with the 3-D process.
Laser projection will also be used for the first time at night on the square, and 167,000 pots of a new type of chrysanthemum, cultivated in Beijing, will be presented for the first time, the bureau said on Thursday.
Themes such as the Winter Olympics, which will be held in Beijing and Zhangjiakou in 2022, and the Long March, whose 80th anniversary is being marked this year, will be integrated into the flower decoration designs.
A gigantic flower basket composed of peonies and lotus will be erected at Tian'anmen Square, the core area for the holiday decorations.
The basket, made through 3-D printing, will be 17 meters tall, with a diameter of 50 meters, according to the bureau.
Building of the huge flower basket will begin on the night of Sept 17 after the Beijing Marathon concludes, making it the latest start date in 32 years.
It is expected to be completed by Sept 25 and will stay until mid-October, said Yang Zhihua, head of the urban forestry department of the Landscape and Forestry Bureau.
Yu Xuebin, head of the company in charge of presenting and maintaining the flowers, said one can get the best photos about 30 meters away from the giant basket.
Decorating Tian'anmen Square and Chang'an Avenue has become a ritual for decades to celebrate National Day on Oct 1.
According to media reports, the flower decorations at Dongdan on Chang'an Avenue will include a "bridge" that can carry the weight of a car.
The "bridge" will be made of about 20,000 translucent bricks, each containing the national flower of one of more than 80 countries along the ancient Silk Road and the Maritime Silk Road.
The 28-meter-long bridge will use Zhaozhou Bridge, a 1,400-year-old stone arch bridge in Hebei province, as the prototype.
Zhang Yanchen, a 29-year-old Beijing resident, said on Friday that he looks forward to seeing the bridge flower decoration. "Because of the splendid flower decoration, driving along Chang'an Avenue will become a perfect delight for the eyes."
